The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, presented the 2025 budget for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) before the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on January 16, 2025. Accompanied by the Force Management Team and senior officers, Egbetokun was joined by key figures, including Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs), and DIG Hashimu Argungu Rtd. (Chairman, Police Service Commission).
In his address, the IGP called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the envelope budgetary system, arguing that this would allow for more accurate and flexible funding projections, ultimately ensuring better management of the Force. Egbetokun also proposed the creation of a Special Operations Account for national security emergencies and an increase in funding for Overhead and Capital Expenditure.
Additionally, the IGP recommended funding for the construction of five new zonal headquarters, alongside support for tactical units vital to internal security. He also emphasized the need for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions to strengthen capacity building.
Egbetokun stressed that the prompt release of appropriated funds in 2025 is crucial for the smooth operation of the NPF. He thanked the Joint Committees for their constructive engagement and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to collaborating with lawmakers to enhance the security and stability of the nation.
