President Bola Tinubu has tasked the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, with coordinating negotiations to facilitate the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland, a key area in the Niger Delta.
The President issued the directive on Tuesday while hosting Ogoni leaders, including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting also had in attendance the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, justice, and sustainable development in Ogoniland, urging the people to embrace reconciliation and unity.
“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct past anomalies. We cannot heal the wounds if we continue to harbor anger,” Tinubu said in a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga. “Let us work together with mutual trust. Return home, consult more, and embrace others. Together, we can bring peace, development, and a clean environment to Ogoniland.”
Tinubu directed ministers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, and the Rivers State Government to collaborate with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to fulfill this mandate.
A Call for Collaboration
Addressing the Ogoni delegation, Tinubu reflected on his long-standing relationship with some of their leaders, noting shared sacrifices during Nigeria’s fight against military dictatorship.
“It is a great honor for me to have this meeting. Many of your sons present here were my friends and co-travelers in the streets of Nigeria, Europe, and America. I know what to do in memory of our beloved ones so that their sacrifices will not be in vain,” he said.
Governor Fubara’s Pledge
Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed gratitude to the President for prioritizing Ogoniland and its people. He highlighted the economic and social importance of resuming oil production in the area.
“This meeting is to solidify our respect and commitment to the President’s directives. We will continue consultations with clear timelines to ensure the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland,” Fubara said.
Ogoni Leaders Voice Support
King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, the Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, speaking on behalf of Ogoni leaders, assured the community’s readiness to engage in constructive dialogue and work toward lasting solutions to the region’s challenges.
NSA Nuhu Ribadu commended the Ogoni people for placing trust in the government and choosing dialogue as a path to progress.
The discussions mark a significant step toward resolving longstanding issues in Ogoniland, as the government seeks to address economic, environmental, and social concerns in the oil-rich region.
