The Lagos State House of Assembly has dismissed claims by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa that he remains the legitimate leader of the House, reaffirming its support for the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, the lawmakers emphasized that more than two-thirds of the members are united in backing Meranda, who was elected following Obasa’s impeachment on January 13.
“The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed,” Olukayode stated. “The stance being pushed by the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obasa, is both uncalled for and unparliamentary.”
The statement highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to good governance and maintaining a harmonious relationship with other arms of government as representatives of the people of Lagos.
Olukayode further explained that while Obasa was initially elected Speaker for the 10th Assembly, the majority of members later voted to remove him from the position.
He urged the former Speaker to embrace peace and align with the cooperative spirit demonstrated by other members of the Assembly.
The ongoing dispute comes as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu continues to engage with the Assembly on critical matters, including the presentation of the 2025 budget on November 21, 2024.
