The national power grid, which has recorded one collapse this year following over 10 incidents in 2024, has once again left several parts of the country in prolonged darkness.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the agency attributed the recent efforts to bolster grid stability to directives from President Bola Tinubu. The statement, signed by Jemilah Adama of NMDPRA’s media unit, emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring adequate gas supply to power generation assets for a significant expansion of the national grid system.
“In line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive, measures are being implemented to ensure all power generation assets receive the gas needed to enhance the capacity and reliability of the national grid,” the statement read.
The agency also issued a stern warning to gas suppliers and off-takers, urging them to maintain a consistent supply of gas to power generation companies (GenCos). “Failure to comply will result in the revocation of licenses, as no act of sabotage will be tolerated,” the statement added.
The national grid has been a persistent weak link in the country’s power infrastructure, with frequent collapses leaving millions of Nigerians in darkness. The latest incident underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address systemic challenges and ensure sustainable power generation and distribution.
