Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, as a towering figure whose passing is a monumental loss to Nigeria. Atiku made the remarks on Sunday during a condolence visit to the family of the late Yoruba leader at his Lekki residence in Lagos.
Reflecting on his past visits to Pa Adebanjo’s home, Atiku praised the late elder statesman for his unwavering principles and dedication to Nigeria’s unity.
“It is quite true that this house has hosted me a couple of times. What did I take away from this house? The virtues that Pa Adebanjo lived and preached throughout his life,” Atiku said.
The former vice president emphasized the significance of honoring Adebanjo’s legacy, stating, “His loss is a monumental loss to his immediate family and to those of us who have admired him and tried to emulate his ways of life and his belief in the unity of this country.”
He further noted that Adebanjo’s impact extended beyond his biological family, as he was regarded as a father figure, adviser, and mentor by many.
“We are here to condole with the family and let you know that we share in your loss. He was also a father to us—an adviser, a guide who always spoke the truth. We will continue to honor him by supporting the family he left behind,” Atiku added.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also visited Adebanjo’s home on Sunday with his entourage to pay his respects.
Pa Ayo Adebanjo passed away at his Lekki residence on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96. His family confirmed his passing in an official statement.
Several other dignitaries, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, have also paid tribute to the late Afenifere leader.
