Ibadan Resident Accuses OPay of Withholding N90,000

By Ayomide Otitoju

An Ibadan resident, Bolanle Idowu, has accused mobile money service provider OPay of failing to refund N90,000 she mistakenly transferred to the wrong account, despite a court ruling in her favor.

Idowu recounted that on November 30, she transferred the money to a filling station attendant in error. Upon realizing the mistake, she immediately contacted OPay’s customer service, which directed her to her bank, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), for assistance. After a prolonged process, OPay agreed to temporarily hold the funds and assured her the issue would be resolved by December 2.

However, after multiple attempts to retrieve her money, Idowu sought legal redress. In December, her lawyer filed a case, leading to a court ruling on December 19 ordering OPay to refund the amount. She presented the court order at OPay’s office on December 23, but despite acknowledging the directive, the company has yet to return her funds.

Efforts to obtain a response from OPay have been unsuccessful. Idowu, expressing frustration, stated that she only seeks the return of her money and has no interest in further legal action.
