Attorneys for R&B singer R. Kelly have accused prison officials of administering an excessive dose of medication that led to his collapse and hospitalization, according to recent court filings.
Kelly, who is serving a 30-year sentence for federal racketeering and sex trafficking at a facility in North Carolina, allegedly received the overdose on June 12 while in solitary confinement. His lawyers said he lost consciousness and was rushed to Duke University Hospital, where he received treatment for two days.
The Bureau of Prisons declined to comment, citing privacy and security protocols.
Kelly’s legal team has renewed a motion for emergency release to home detention, claiming he is being targeted in a murder plot orchestrated by prison staff. However, prosecutors dismissed the allegations as “fanciful” and “theatrical,” arguing the motion was improperly filed.
Kelly was convicted in New York in 2021, and later in Chicago in 2022 for child pornography and enticement of a minor. He is serving both sentences concurrently.
