The newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has called on President Bola Tinubu to approve the creation of Ibadan State, describing it as a long-standing desire of the people.
Speaking during his coronation at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, on Friday, Oba Ladoja, who also celebrated his 81st birthday a day earlier, reiterated the Olubadan-in-Council’s position. “They have a message for you, Mr President. They want Ibadan State. Or is it not so?” he asked the crowd, urging citizens to “rise and appreciate the President in advance” for granting the request.
Oba Ladoja stressed the urgency of the demand, urging that Ibadan State be created before the 2027 elections. State creation has been a recurring issue among groups seeking amendments in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution. Nigeria currently has 36 states across six geopolitical zones.
During the ceremony, the monarch received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde amid cheers from residents and dignitaries. The coronation attracted traditional and religious leaders, as well as serving and former governors. Notable attendees included the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. Former governors Donald Duke, Ibikunle Amosun, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Rabiu Kwankwaso were also present.
President Tinubu, who attended the event, congratulated Oba Ladoja, describing him as “a rare gem in history” and praising his resilience during his tenure as Oyo State governor. He also reassured Nigerians that “the economy has turned the corner” and promised brighter days ahead.
Governor Makinde officially presented the staff of office to Oba Ladoja, commending the unity of Ibadan’s traditional institution and congratulating “all sons and daughters of Ibadanland at home and abroad.”
Oba Ladoja, in his speech, pledged to continue serving Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, and Africa, while highlighting the importance of development and unity in the historic city.
