The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated citizens on the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary, urging greater patriotism, collective sacrifice, and faith in God to overcome the country’s challenges.
In a statement on Wednesday, CAN President Daniel Okoh called on Nigerians—both leaders and citizens—to rise above ethnic, religious, and political divides and work together for the common good.
Okoh acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians, recalling how the nation endured civil war, periods of instability, and recurring economic and social crises. “In spite of these difficulties, our people have shown remarkable courage and faith, sustaining hope in the promise of a better Nigeria,” he said. He also highlighted the progress made in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and telecommunications since independence.
The CAN President commended the economic reforms initiated by the President Bola Tinubu administration but noted the hardships they have brought. “Economic reforms, while necessary, have caused temporary hardship for millions. Rising costs of living, food insecurity, unemployment, and inflation continue to weigh heavily on households. True progress must be measured not only by statistics but by the food on every table, the security of every community, and the opportunities available to every child,” he said.
On security, Okoh described the situation as an urgent concern, citing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal conflicts as ongoing threats that have caused displacement and suffering. He urged stronger collaboration between security agencies, communities, and faith-based organisations to ensure the protection of lives and property and consolidate peace across the country.
