President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in Lagos, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to developing Nigeria’s maritime sector as a strategic alternative to fossil energy.
Speaking during the audience, President Tinubu highlighted the recent signing of the National Maritime Policy as a deliberate measure to embed global best practices and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
In his remarks, the IMO Secretary-General commended the Federal Government for its notable achievements in maritime safety and security, particularly efforts to safeguard the Gulf of Guinea. Dominguez assured that the UN agency is ready to collaborate with Nigeria to sustain the sector’s recent successes.
The engagement was led by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and included key industry leaders such as Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Olufemi Oloruntola; Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola; Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubaker Dansoho; and Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji.
The meeting underscored Nigeria’s commitment to maritime growth, safety, and international collaboration in line with global standards.
