The Director-General of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Mr. Joseph Tegbe, has underscored discipline, scale and long-term planning as essential drivers of sustainable enterprise development in Nigeria, citing China’s economic transformation as a practical model for growth.
Mr. Tegbe made the remarks during a presentation titled “Hacking Your Personal Economic Growth: Lessons from China’s National Development Journey” at a three-day capacity-building seminar themed “Leveraging Chinese Partnerships to Scale Nigerian Businesses.” The seminar was organised as part of NCSP’s ongoing efforts to promote structured knowledge exchange and enterprise-focused learning.
According to him, China’s rise was the result of deliberate policy choices anchored on focus, standardisation and consistent execution, rather than chance. He explained that many Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) initially grew by adapting existing products, proven business models and imported technologies, before introducing incremental innovations.
Mr. Tegbe noted that Chinese enterprises typically excel by mastering a single product or service, efficiently replicating it at scale, and innovating gradually based on tested models. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration, pointing out that businesses in China often operate within industrial clusters that share infrastructure, suppliers and labour, a structure that significantly lowers costs and boosts productivity.
Emphasising discipline as China’s most enduring competitive advantage, he said Chinese entrepreneurs are known for aggressively reinvesting profits into machinery, inventory and process efficiency, while maintaining modest lifestyles during early growth stages. He added that strict cost control, accurate financial tracking and a clear understanding of unit economics are critical to sustaining profitability and achieving scale.
The NCSP Director-General urged Nigerian entrepreneurs to focus on technical competence, market-driven expansion, export readiness and patient, long-term strategies, rather than short-term gains. He reaffirmed NCSP’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria–China cooperation delivers practical outcomes that enhance productivity, enterprise development and economic self-reliance.
The Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership continues to strengthen bilateral collaboration between Nigeria and China in areas including trade, investment, technology transfer, infrastructure development and capacity building, with the overarching goal of delivering measurable and lasting value to the Nigerian economy.
