Seyi Makinde has called for improved welfare for Nigeria’s military personnel, stressing that prioritising their well-being would encourage greater dedication to securing the nation.
The governor made the appeal at the Chief of Army Staff Special Sallah Celebration held at the Forward Operating Base in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area, with troops of the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.
Makinde commended the soldiers for their sacrifices, noting that their efforts have helped make Oyo State one of the safest in the country. He linked the state’s progress in sectors such as the economy, education, and health to the security provided by the troops.
“While many of us are with our families celebrating Eid, they are at the frontline, keeping us safe. What more sacrifice can we have?” Makinde said. He further stressed that the welfare of the troops must be prioritised, noting ongoing programmes and policies by the Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Army leadership to support soldiers.
He concluded with a prayer for protection over the troops and their families, saying, “As you give your best to ensure we can sleep with our two eyes closed, I pray for protection over your families wherever they may be.”
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General MD Shagaya, Commander of Corps Supply and Transport, lauded the 2 Division personnel for their discipline, resilience, and commitment, acknowledging the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in service.
Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, also thanked Governor Makinde for his administration’s support over the past seven years, describing the luncheon as an important morale booster for troops.
The event was attended by top military officers including Brigadier General AS Bugaje, Garrison Commander of 2 Division, and key state officials such as Chief Bayo Lawal, Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor, and Honourable Abiodun Oni, Chairman/Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency.
