The Plateau State government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack on Angwan Rukuba that left multiple people dead and others injured.
The curfew, announced by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, will take effect from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026. Authorities cited a “tragic security incident” at Gari Ya Waye community on Sunday as the reason for the measure.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked,” assuring residents that security agencies have been mobilised to restore order and apprehend the perpetrators. “All necessary measures are being taken to ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
The government urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding during the curfew and cooperate with security forces by providing credible information to aid investigations. Movement will be strictly restricted in the local government area except for essential services.
The attack has intensified concerns over security in Jos, with residents calling for sustained efforts to prevent further violence. Plateau State, like other parts of North-Central and North-West Nigeria, has faced repeated attacks by non-state armed groups.
On March 14, suspected bandits killed 20 people and stole cattle from a village in Jos, according to the Kanam Development Association (KADA). The group said gunmen ambushed soldiers on routine patrol, resulting in 12 security personnel and eight civilians killed. The attackers then raided a nearby community, stealing property and livestock.
“These repeated attacks further compound the suffering of already vulnerable rural communities,” KADA said, noting that villages in the area have faced ongoing violence and kidnappings in recent years.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, continues to grapple with insurgency, with military efforts complicated by the presence of multiple armed groups across the region.
