World number one Jannik Sinner produced a dominant performance on Sunday to defeat Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 and win the Madrid Open for the first time.
The Italian secured a record fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title and extended his winning streak to 23 matches with a commanding display in the Spanish capital.
Only tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have previously managed to win four consecutive titles at this level.
“I’m trying to make my own mark. I don’t play for records; I just try to put myself in a position to succeed,” Sinner said after the victory, adding that he focuses on personal performance rather than comparisons with the sport’s greats.
Sinner broke early in both sets, taking full control of the match as Zverev struggled to find rhythm. The world number one quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back, using powerful serving and precise shot-making to dominate proceedings.
The German, a two-time Madrid champion, briefly held serve in the first set but was unable to withstand Sinner’s consistent pressure.
Sinner also showcased improved variety in his game, including well-timed drop shots, before sealing the first set with an ace.
In the second set, he broke again early to maintain control, before finishing the match with another break and a commanding service game to secure the title.
Zverev showed more resistance in the second set but was ultimately outclassed by Sinner’s relentless pace and accuracy.
The win further strengthens Sinner’s position at the top of men’s tennis, especially with injury concerns limiting other top contenders ahead of the French Open.
