At least 25 people have been killed following an attack by suspected bandits on Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The Chairman of Bokkos LGA, Samuel Amalau, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, saying the attackers stormed the community around midnight on Monday and opened fire on residents.
He added that the assailants also invaded a primary health care centre, where four people were killed.
While a youth leader in the area, identified as Tula, claimed about 30 people were killed, the council chairman said authorities have so far confirmed 25 fatalities.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the attack, as investigations continue to ascertain the full scale of the incident.
The latest violence comes months after a deadly ambush in parts of Plateau State in which security operatives and vigilantes were killed during a joint patrol operation in Kanam Local Government Area, amid ongoing insecurity across border communities in Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi states.Copyright TRUSTAFRICA NEWS.
