The African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Executive Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) have announced that the 9th edition of Africa’s premier music awards will now take place from Wednesday, January 7 to Sunday, January 11, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria.
Originally scheduled for November 25–30, 2025, the new dates were finalized after extensive consultations with partners, artists, and stakeholders across the continent and the diaspora.
Ms. Angela Martins, Acting Director of Social Development, Culture and Sports at the AUC, said the partnership with AFRIMA reinforces the AU’s vision of using culture and creativity as tools for sustainable development and continental unity.
“This relationship aligns perfectly with the AU’s Cultural Policy for Africa and Agenda 2063, which prioritize the creative economy as a driver of youth empowerment and integration,” Martins stated. “The new dates offer an opportunity to further showcase Africa’s rich diversity, innovation, and cultural excellence to the world.”
AFRIMA’s Regional Director for Central Africa, Nde Ndifonka—popularly known as Wax Dey—said the rescheduling will allow for wider participation and ensure a world-class experience.
“AFRIMA is not just an award show; it’s Africa’s global music stage,” Ndifonka said. “The January timeline gives us room to deliver an unforgettable celebration of Africa’s creative power, enabling greater involvement from artists, fans, media, and partners.”
The 9th AFRIMA, hosted in partnership with the African Union Commission, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and Lagos State, will feature a week-long celebration of African music, culture, and entertainment.
The festival will kick off on January 7 with a Welcome Soirée for nominees, delegates, and international media, alongside the Diamond Showcase, which will spotlight 15 emerging African talents.
On January 8, attention will turn to the Africa Music Business Summit (AMBS)—a flagship forum for thought leadership and collaboration in the African music industry—followed by the Music Icons’ Night celebrating legendary African artists.
January 9 will feature community outreach events, cultural tours, and the lively AFRIMA Music Village, an open-air concert showcasing top African performers.
The excitement continues on January 10 with the Nominees and Industry Party, honoring past winners, current nominees, and key sponsors.
The festivities will culminate on Sunday, January 11, 2026, with the AFRIMA Awards Ceremony at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos. The live event, including red carpet coverage and performances by Africa’s biggest stars, will be broadcast to audiences in more than 84 countries worldwide.
