Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senator representing Kogi Central, has called on Nigeria’s military leadership to take decisive action following a deadly attack in Plateau State.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the lawmaker directly addressed the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, urging him to move beyond assurances and deliver tangible security results. “Enough of condolences. Enough of excuses. Nigerians want action, protection, and results,” she wrote, referring to the Angwan Rukuba attack as “another brutal reminder that Nigerians remain unprotected.”
The attack occurred Sunday night in Angwan Rukuba and surrounding communities in Jos North LGA, where over 20 gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at a busy junction, an open-air bar, and nearby residential areas, including housing for University of Jos students. Witnesses described chaos as residents ran for safety, leaving scores dead and many injured.
This incident follows weeks after at least 20 security operatives and vigilantes were killed in an ambush by heavily armed bandits in Wanka and Garga communities, Kanam Local Government Area. The violence has sparked protests, with some youths reportedly blocking major roads.
Caleb Mutfwang, Plateau State Governor, condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked,” convened emergency security meetings, and visited affected areas. The state government also imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to prevent further escalation.
The latest attack underscores the ongoing insecurity in Plateau and neighbouring states, where communities continue to face killings, kidnappings, and cattle rustling, heightening concerns over the effectiveness of existing security measures.
