The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), led by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has ramped up measures to tackle the escalating erosion crisis in the state, recover encroached government lands, and implement strategic projects aimed at driving economic growth and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Law Mefor, disclosed the council’s decisions following its 25th meeting at the Lighthouse, Awka.
Mefor said the council expressed deep concern over the threat erosion poses to lives, property, and infrastructure, attributing the worsening situation to poor community practices and regulatory lapses.
“The council has resolved to strengthen enforcement measures to ensure individuals manage stormwater on their properties and that communities adhere to environmental guidelines, including building erosion barriers and limiting sand excavation to designated sites,” he stated, adding that non-compliance would attract strict government action.
The state government will enforce environmental regulations, mandate erosion control measures, regulate sand extraction, and work with relevant agencies to hold offenders accountable. Mefor expressed confidence that with public support, Anambra will overcome the erosion challenges and continue to attract economic and business activities.
In a related decision, ANSEC approved the formation of a committee to reclaim government lands that have been illegally occupied or developed. “The government will not tolerate the misuse of its lands. All necessary measures will be taken to recover these properties for the benefit of the people of Anambra State,” Mefor said.
The council also sanctioned several infrastructure projects to boost the state’s development, including:
Water supply provision to the Ekwulobia Flyover Bridge Fountain and ornamental garden by Double NC Construction & Logistics Ltd;
Installation of a three-way traffic light with pedestrian signals at Ifite-Amenyi intersection, Awka, by S.N.U. Ventures;
Supply and installation of two 10 kVA inverters with 15 kW lithium batteries at the Anambra State Civil Service Commission Building, Awka, by Kennolly Enterprises;
Transformer substations at Nnewi and Umueze-Anam communities by Aries and Gold Ventures Ltd and Aljovic Construction Ltd;
Landscaping of the car park for the Trauma Centre at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, by Triseconds Resources Ltd.
The council reiterated its commitment to sustainable development, environmental protection, and proper management of public assets as key pillars of the Soludo administration’s development agenda.
