The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its warning strike following ten days of mediation efforts by the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other concerned Nigerians.
In a statement issued after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the union expressed appreciation to all parties who intervened in the dispute, commending their “understanding, resilience, and solidarity.”
“Consequently, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the overwhelming support of Nigerians,” the statement read. “In addition, NEC resolved that a one-month window should be given to the government to conclude the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and fully address other outstanding issues.”
ASUU urged the Federal Government to seize the opportunity to resolve all pending matters to ensure lasting industrial harmony and stability in the university system.
The union further resolved that if the government fails to meet its commitments within the one-month period, ASUU reserves the right to resume strike action without further notice.
It also appealed to patriotic Nigerians and education stakeholders to prevail upon the government to hasten the renegotiation process and fulfil its promises.
