The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has named former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as its new National Chairman.
Turaki, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan, emerged as a consensus candidate following extensive consultations among party leaders from the North.
The decision was reached late Wednesday night at a meeting of PDP stakeholders in Abuja, with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri announcing Turaki’s selection.
Governor Fintiri said the choice of Turaki followed “broad consultations and alignment of interests” among Northern party leaders aimed at unifying the PDP ahead of future elections.
Those present at the meeting included the outgoing PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum; Governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; former Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana; and former Kaduna State Governors Ibrahim Shekarau and Ahmed Makarfi, among others.
Turaki’s appointment marks a new phase for the opposition party as it prepares for internal restructuring and strategic repositioning.
Details of the consensus process and his formal inauguration are expected to be announced in the coming days.
