In an emotional farewell at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, President Joe Biden passed the torch to Democratic nominee Kamala Harris on Monday, embracing her on stage and reflecting on his decades of public service. The 81-year-old Biden, quoting a patriotic hymn, said, “America, I gave my best to you,” during a nearly hour-long address that highlighted his achievements and urged voters to support Harris against Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.
Harris, who joined Biden on stage to a rapturous reception, has revitalized the party since Biden’s stunning decision last month to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Despite the shift, Biden emphasized he harbored no bitterness, stating that his decision was driven by a desire to prevent Trump’s return to the Oval Office. “I love the job, but I love my country more,” he said, dismissing rumors of anger over stepping aside.
Both Biden and Harris appeared emotional, wiping away tears as the audience gave the president a four-minute standing ovation. Biden, introduced by First Lady Jill Biden and his daughter Ashley, focused his speech on his accomplishments, particularly his efforts to “heal the soul of America” after Trump’s presidency and the January 6 Capitol riot. He also took direct aim at Trump, referring to him as a “loser” and a “convicted felon” following Trump’s legal troubles.
Harris, making a surprise appearance ahead of her official nomination acceptance, praised Biden’s leadership and legacy. “We are forever grateful to you,” she said, underscoring her gratitude for his service. The night, marked by Biden’s reflections and the show of unity, set the tone for the convention, with Biden pledging to be Harris’s “best volunteer” as she seeks to defeat Trump.
The convention’s opening also saw protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Trump, reacting to the Democratic leadership change, criticized Harris in a Pennsylvania rally, questioning her competence on economic issues.
