Hollywood’s celebrated African actor, Djimon Gaston Hounsou, will take center stage this weekend on African Voices Changemakers, the popular CNN International magazine program sponsored by digital solutions giant, Globacom.
Hounsou, born in Benin Republic in April 1960, will join program anchor Larry Madowo to discuss his remarkable journey in Hollywood and his efforts to connect the Black diaspora to its roots through the Djimon Hounsou Foundation. The foundation, launched in New York in 2019, focuses on empowering Africans and promoting cultural heritage.
The multi-award-winning actor made his debut in the 1990 film Without You, I’m Nothing. He has since earned acclaim for his roles in iconic films such as Amistad (1997), Gladiator (2000), and the French film Forces spéciales (2011). Hounsou’s stellar performances have garnered him several prestigious accolades, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in Drama and the NAACP Image Award in 1998 for Amistad. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2004 and received an Outstanding Performance Award for Blood Diamond in 2007.
Through his foundation, Hounsou has championed initiatives like Run Richmond 16.19, which celebrates African heritage and fosters a sense of unity among the diaspora. His efforts bridge history, culture, and community, emphasizing a shared mission to honor African roots.
African Voices Changemakers will air on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and will be repeated the same day at noon. Additional broadcasts are scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., as well as Monday at 4 a.m. Repeat editions will follow the same schedule next week, starting Saturday.
