The United States has announced a sweeping new sanctions package targeting over 400 entities linked to Russia’s energy sector, a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hailed as a critical blow to Moscow’s war machine.
Zelenskyy, writing on his official X account on Friday, described the sanctions as a “significant step” in dismantling the financial and logistical networks underpinning Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.
The measures aim to disrupt key segments of Russia’s energy industry, including major oil producers, insurance companies, service providers, logistics facilities, and a fleet of 184 so-called “shadow tankers” used to evade previous sanctions.
“I am grateful to @POTUS, his administration, and the entire American people for today’s announcement,” Zelenskyy stated. “These measures deliver a significant blow to the financial foundation of Russia’s war machine by targeting its supply chain: key Russian producers, insurance firms, service providers in the oil and gas industry, shadow fleet tankers, and logistics facilities.”
Among the notable targets is Surgutneftegaz, a prominent Russian oil company, which Zelenskyy called a financial lifeline for President Vladimir Putin.
The sanctions are expected to significantly reduce Russia’s revenue from energy exports, which Zelenskyy suggested could accelerate the resolution of the conflict. He emphasized the need for energy resources to serve global stability rather than be wielded as instruments of war.
“Energy resources should never be used as weapons, as Russia does,” he said. “Countries that respect international law can and should ensure stable and reliable energy supplies for the entire world.”
Zelenskyy also praised the bipartisan nature of U.S. support, reiterating Ukraine’s confidence in the measures’ ability to hold Russia accountable.
“We are deeply grateful for America’s leadership in holding Russia accountable. I am confident these steps will significantly reduce Russia’s petrodollar income and, with it, its ability to continue its aggression,” he concluded.
The sanctions represent the latest effort by the U.S. to exert economic pressure on Moscow, with hopes that curtailing energy revenues will undermine its ability to finance the war in Ukraine.
