The Federal Government has announced plans to commence the production of 1.2 million metric tons of green methanol annually as part of efforts to achieve net-zero shipping emissions by 2050.
Speaking at a summit in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, revealed that the initiative, known as the “Landmark Green Hydrogen” project, will begin with an initial phase in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at an estimated cost of €5.9 billion.
The summit was attended by key stakeholders, including the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, federal lawmakers, and representatives from the International Maritime Organization.
Discussions at the event centered on the urgent need to implement effective solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s agenda for net-zero emissions by 2050.
