The Ghetto Kids, a Ugandan dance troupe made up of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, have expressed excitement after being selected by global music star Shakira to perform at the World Cup final half-time show in the United States this summer.
Shakira announced the invitation on Instagram, naming the Kampala-based group as her first choice for the performance, sparking widespread celebration within the troupe and its supporters.
The Ghetto Kids, an NGO founded in Uganda’s capital Kampala, uses dance and performing arts to support abandoned and orphaned children, helping them rebuild their lives through creativity and training.
One of the young performers, eight-year-old Busingye Josephine Daniella, said the group was eager to showcase their talent on a global stage.
“We can’t wait to show the world what we are!” she said.
The troupe gained international attention after responding to Shakira’s call for fan-submitted dance clips for a World Cup anthem, with their energetic performances going viral online.
They have since built a global following, with appearances including a performance on the television talent show America’s Got Talent.
Another member, 16-year-old Ssegirinyi Madwanah, described the invitation as a life-changing opportunity.
“Getting outside the country and performing on one of the biggest stages feels good and brings a lot of opportunities,” she said.
Founder of the group, Kavuma Dauda, a former street child himself, said the recognition could help advance the organisation’s mission of supporting vulnerable children through education and rehabilitation.
“We have that big dream… it’s a very huge opportunity for the Ghetto Kids and for the children,” he said.
