Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter, Kcee, has disclosed that repeated snubs by award organisers early in his career left him emotionally distressed and in tears.
The Afrobeats artiste, formerly one half of the duo KC Presh, said the lack of industry recognition despite his efforts prompted him to stop placing importance on awards. Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, he noted that while he received strong support from fans, he was consistently overlooked for nominations.
Kcee explained that the experience shaped his perspective on success, leading him to prioritise impact and audience appreciation over formal accolades. He, however, described the success of his hit track Limpopo as a turning point, noting that it marked his breakthrough into the global music scene.
The 47-year-old artiste, who began his music career in 1999 and rose to prominence after KC Presh won the Star Quest competition in 2002, also highlighted the viral success of his 2024 hit Ojapiano, which gained significant traction on TikTok.
Known for his versatility, Kcee has released several hit songs over the years, including Okpekete, Tender, Ojaginger, and Big Fish, alongside culturally themed projects. His 2025 album, Okonkwo and Sons Unlimited, blends highlife with contemporary Afrobeats and features collaborations with international and Nigerian artistes.
