The Lagos State Government has announced that the enforcement of the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) will begin “very soon,” according to Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBRA) on Thursday, Wahab emphasized the state’s commitment to addressing the environmental impact of SUPs. He urged Lagosians to continue supporting the government’s initiatives, particularly in the transition from styrofoam to SUP bans.
“We are very strategic and intentional about this ban. I urge Lagosians to see it as part of our collective effort to protect the environment. We will be considerate in implementing this policy, focusing on reducing waste and promoting recycling and reuse,” Wahab said in a statement issued on Friday.
The commissioner also highlighted the complexity of regulating SUPs, noting that the government is focused on sustainability and long-term environmental health. He assured residents that while styrofoam posed significant challenges, the focus will now shift to the more complex issue of SUPs.
Addressing rumors about the potential ban of sachet water, commonly known as “pure water,” Wahab clarified that the government has no intention to ban it. Instead, he revealed plans to implement a buyback scheme for the sachets and confirmed ongoing efforts to enhance recycling initiatives.
“We are not banning pure water. We will buy the sachets back and are working on a buyback system. Several recycling interventions are also in the pipeline,” he added.
