French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will address the nation on Wednesday evening in response to growing global uncertainty following a dramatic shift in U.S. policy on Ukraine under former President Donald Trump.
“My dear compatriots, I will speak to you tonight at 8:00 pm (1900 GMT) during this moment of great uncertainty when the world is facing immense challenges,” Macron wrote on X (formerly Twitter), signaling his first major address since Trump’s unexpected foreign policy changes.
Macron’s speech comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday called for a “truce” in the sea and sky as an initial step toward ending the three-year war with Russia. Zelensky’s appeal follows a tense meeting at the White House last Friday, where he clashed with Trump over U.S. support for Ukraine.
In a later statement, Trump revealed that he had received an “important” letter from Zelensky, in which the Ukrainian leader expressed Kyiv’s readiness for peace talks with Russia and willingness to finalize a minerals agreement with the United States. “I appreciate that he [Zelensky] sent this letter,” Trump stated.
The French presidency welcomed Zelensky’s willingness to “re-engage in dialogue” with Trump, affirming Macron’s continued diplomatic efforts. The Élysée Palace emphasized that Macron has maintained regular communication with both leaders and reiterated France’s commitment to working with all stakeholders toward a lasting peace in Ukraine.
Macron’s address is expected to outline France’s position on the evolving geopolitical landscape and reaffirm its role in fostering stability amid the uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Ukraine relations.
