Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed that schoolchildren and teachers abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area are being held within the Old Oyo National Park.
The governor made the disclosure in an update on rescue operations released on Friday, nearly four weeks after the victims were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities on May 15, 2026.
Makinde said security agencies are actively working to secure the safe release of the abductees, noting that intelligence reports indicate they are being held within the vast forest reserve spanning about 2,500 square kilometres across 10 local government areas.
He explained that the difficult terrain of the park has posed significant operational challenges, requiring sustained coordination and careful planning to ensure a successful rescue mission.
The governor assured residents that all credible intelligence is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the victims’ release unharmed. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free emergency line, 615.
Makinde warned against the spread of unverified information, saying misinformation could undermine ongoing rescue efforts, and appealed for continued public support and prayers for the abducted students and teachers.
He stressed that the situation is being handled daily by security agencies, adding that authorities remain committed to bringing all victims home safely.
