Mastercard and Zenith Bank have unveiled the Essential Debit Card, a new scalable payment solution aimed at expanding access to secure digital financial services for underserved Nigerians, particularly low-income earners who often face obstacles to formal banking.
The rollout comes as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to accelerate. Data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) shows that electronic payment transactions surged to ₦1.08 quadrillion in 2024—an 80 per cent jump from ₦600 trillion in 2023. Point-of-sale transactions also climbed by 81 per cent year-on-year to ₦19.4 trillion, underscoring rising consumer trust in digital platforms and growing demand for inclusive financial tools.
Folasade Femi-Lawal, Mastercard’s Country Manager and Area Business Head for West Africa, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to inclusive innovation. “The Essential Debit Card offers a gateway to economic opportunity for millions. Through this collaboration with Zenith Bank, we are scaling impact by meeting people where they are, with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world,” she said.
Zenith Bank’s Group Managing Director and Chief Executive, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, described the launch as a major step toward closing Nigeria’s financial inclusion gap. “By offering an affordable, secure and practical digital payment solution, we’re empowering more Nigerians to participate in the formal economy, supporting not only individual progress but national economic growth,” she said.
Zenith Bank began issuing the Essential Debit Card in July 2025 through its nationwide branch network and digital channels. Customers can opt for either a physical or virtual version. As one of the first tier-one banks to adopt Mastercard’s Essential Debit framework, Zenith Bank aims to reach high-potential, underserved markets using simplified onboarding processes and lower issuance costs.
With Mastercard’s global technology and Zenith Bank’s extensive reach, the Essential Debit Card is positioned to provide a simple, secure and affordable payment option tailored to the way Nigerians transact today. The initiative underscores both institutions’ commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a digitally driven financial landscape.
