Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has expressed confidence and optimism as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting the team is united and motivated to make amends for recent setbacks.
Ndidi, who was named captain earlier this week, said the Super Eagles are heading into the tournament with high morale and belief. Speaking in an interview with POOJA on Tuesday, the 28-year-old described the atmosphere in camp as positive and focused.
“The expectation is really high. Everyone is talking about it, the mood in camp is very positive, and the boys are really excited. We are ready for the challenge,” Ndidi said.
The former Leicester City midfielder described captaining the national team as both a privilege and a responsibility, stressing that while his role has evolved, his commitment to the team remains unchanged.
“It’s really exciting. It’s the same player, just with much improvement and more responsibility. Being captain of the Super Eagles is a privilege and an honour,” he said, adding that he is ready to lead with the support of senior players, the coaching crew, and team officials.
Nigeria head into the AFCON seeking redemption after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a setback Ndidi admitted was deeply disappointing for both players and fans. However, he believes the continental tournament offers an opportunity for a positive response.
“Not qualifying for the World Cup was really sad for us as players and for Nigerians, but this tournament is a big step for us to get something positive again,” he said.
Three-time AFCON champions, Nigeria will be looking to reassert themselves as one of Africa’s football powerhouses when they face Tanzania in their Group C opener on Tuesday.
