All eyes are on Rabat as Nigeria and host nation Morocco face off in a blockbuster semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles, boasting stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, have been in scintillating form, winning all five of their matches in the tournament under coach Éric Chelle. Their 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria, coupled with 14 goals scored so far, has cemented their reputation as one of the tournament’s most formidable sides. Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, aim to return to the final after losing the 2023 edition to Côte d’Ivoire.
Morocco, the 1976 champions, enter the clash unbeaten and eager to claim their second continental title. Led by Achraf Hakimi and in-form Brahim Diaz, who tops the tournament scoring charts with five goals, the Atlas Lions will look to leverage home advantage and an electrifying crowd to contain Nigeria’s attacking threats.
Despite a strong squad, Nigeria will miss captain Wilfred Ndidi due to suspension, with Raphael Onyedika expected to fill the midfield role. The Super Eagles, however, retain their attacking firepower, with Osimhen and Lookman combining for seven goals and Lookman leading the tournament with four assists. Alex Iwobi’s playmaking adds further depth to Nigeria’s challenge.
Historically, Morocco has held the upper hand in AFCON clashes, winning three of five previous meetings, including matches in 1976 and 2004. With both sides chasing history, Wednesday’s game promises a tightly contested battle, potentially shaping the narrative of AFCON 2025.
