The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday formally installed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following his appointment by Bola Tinubu.
Disu, 59, assumed office at a brief handover ceremony held at the Louis Edet House headquarters in Abuja, shortly after being decorated by the President at the Presidential Villa. His appointment was announced a day earlier.
In his inaugural address, the acting IGP pledged to anchor his tenure on professionalism, modernisation, and accountability, promising to deliver a more transparent and service-oriented police force.
“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Disu said before senior officers, family members and other dignitaries.
He charged officers nationwide to uphold integrity, compassion and courage in the discharge of their duties, while assuring them of improved welfare and operational support.
“To all officers, I will demand the best from you because the people we serve deserve nothing less,” he said. “I will fight for your welfare, your dignity, and the conditions you need to serve effectively.”
Disu’s appointment followed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing pressing family reasons.
In his remarks, Egbetokun urged his successor to consolidate on reforms initiated during his tenure, including enhanced inter-agency collaboration, intelligence-led policing, and improved accountability mechanisms.
“As I hand over to my successor—one chosen among the best—I do so with confidence in his competence, experience, and strategic capacity,” Egbetokun said, calling for sustained momentum in intelligence integration and community-centred policing.
He highlighted milestones recorded under his leadership, including targeted operations against kidnapping syndicates and violent criminal networks, as well as measures aimed at improving officer welfare through timely promotions, strengthened insurance frameworks, expanded housing initiatives and capacity development.
Earlier at the decoration ceremony, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s ability to lead the force, referencing his performance during previous assignments in Lagos.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” the President said, urging him to adopt innovative strategies to tackle banditry, terrorism and other security challenges.
Until his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG in 2025.
A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later in the Federal Capital Territory. He also headed the Intelligence Response Team of the NPF.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the police on May 18, 1992. Over the course of his career, he has held several command positions, including Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State; Ikare and Owo in Ondo State; and Elimbu and Elelenwo in Rivers State.
