Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized the country’s ongoing socioeconomic and political stagnation, attributing it to a leadership deficit. Speaking in Abeokuta on Saturday as the Special Guest of Honour at the Leadership Empowerment International Conference, Obasanjo called for a shift away from “self-centred” leaders who he believes are obstructing progress.
The conference, held in partnership with the South Africa-based Immanuel Theology Institute International and Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative Inc., honored 25 distinguished Nigerians with honorary Doctorates in Leadership.
Obasanjo argued that Nigeria’s development is hindered by leaders who lack knowledge, understanding, and a service-oriented approach. He urged Nigerians to seek transformational leaders who prioritize effective governance over transactional leadership.
“There is no end to leadership and service to your community until you breathe your last,” Obasanjo said. “Leadership that is self-centred and devoid of understanding is the bane of Nigeria today. If we get leadership right, we will correct other issues.”
He commended Prof. Olusesi Obateye, International Coordinator of Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative, and Prof. Van Den Berg Edward Alfred, President of the South Africa-based Institute, for their efforts in recognizing and promoting leadership excellence.
Prof. Obateye, addressing the conference theme “Responsible and Responsive Leadership,” lamented the persistent lack of good leadership in Nigeria, which he identified as a key factor in the country’s underdevelopment since independence.
Among those awarded honorary doctorates were former Ogun State Commissioners Engr. Anthony Ojeshina, Hon. Kehinde Sogunle, and Hon. Dele Obadina, former PDP State Chairman Chief Joju Fadairo, and former Central Bank of Nigeria Director Engr. Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi.
