Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has called on the Bola Tinubu administration to conduct a national debate involving citizens before finalizing the contentious tax reform bills. Obi emphasized the importance of public engagement in ensuring inclusivity and trust in policymaking.
Speaking on the matter, Obi acknowledged the critical nature of tax reforms for Nigeria’s development but stressed that such changes must undergo thorough deliberation.
“Tax reform is essential, but it must be subject to robust and informed public debate,” Obi stated. “Public hearings are crucial, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to contribute meaningfully. This approach fosters public trust and ensures inclusivity in decision-making.”
Call for Deliberation and Transparency
Obi cautioned against rushing reforms of such magnitude, highlighting the need for diverse opinions and inputs through public hearings.
“When considering tax reforms, it’s not enough to focus solely on increasing government revenue. We must also weigh the broader impact on the nation and ensure regional sustainability. The government must educate and secure the support of the people for any policy changes,” he said.
He underscored that trust and legitimacy are the bedrock of effective governance. “Without these, even well-intentioned reforms can fail. Transparency, deliberation, and public engagement must be prioritized to build a truly participatory democracy,” Obi added.
Growing Controversy
The tax reform bills have sparked heated debates since their introduction. Northern governors have called for the withdrawal of the bills, citing concerns over regional impact and fairness. Obi’s intervention aligns with broader calls for a more inclusive approach to the reforms.
