Rivers State activist Jake Epelle has dismissed any attempt by former governor Nyesom Wike and his loyalists in the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, declaring that such a move would not succeed.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Epelle criticized Wike for allegedly orchestrating the impeachment efforts while simultaneously calling for peace.
“Let them try impeachment; they will not succeed,” Epelle asserted. “Nobody will impeach Fubara because he has committed no impeachable offense. The people are solidly behind him.”
The political standoff between the Wike-backed Assembly and Fubara escalated on Wednesday when the governor was denied access to the Assembly Quarters to re-present the 2025 state budget, following a Supreme Court ruling mandating the process.
Meanwhile, Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), defended the lawmakers’ impeachment push, citing allegations that Fubara withheld their salaries.
Epelle criticized the Assembly’s actions as a deliberate embarrassment to the governor and accused Wike of inflaming tensions. He also claimed that external influences were dictating the Assembly’s moves.
“There is someone beating the drum for this Assembly, and they are simply dancing to the tune,” he said, warning that the crisis could set a dangerous precedent for Nigerian democracy.
