Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated Juju music legend, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, described the music icon as a global figure who helped take Nigerian music to the international stage.
The governor said King Sunny Ade was among the early African musicians to gain international recognition, bringing honour to Nigeria and the continent.
He noted that the musician had remained a major figure in Nigeria’s creative industry for more than six decades, using his music to promote unity, joy and culture.
“King Sunny Ade is an elder statesman, a community leader, a respected music maestro of our generation and a man who has used music as a tool to spread joy across all sections of our country, bringing us together for the common good,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He expressed gratitude for the musician’s contribution to society, saying King Sunny Ade had used his music and intellect to positively influence generations.
“On behalf of my family and the people of Lagos State, I celebrate our own King Sunny Ade at 80. He is not just a music maestro but an elder statesman and a community leader who has brought honour to Nigeria. We pray for greater strength and continued relevance for him,” the governor said.
