Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been honoured with the Most Influential Governor of the Year Award by the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD).

The award was presented on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of MIPAD, led by its Founder and President, Mr Kamil Olufowobi, to the Lagos House, Marina.

Olufowobi said the recognition was conferred on Governor Sanwo-Olu in acknowledgement of his performance in office and his impact on governance and society. He described the award as a global recognition under the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent, noting the strategic importance of Lagos as the economic capital of the world’s largest Black nation.

In his response, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the award would further motivate him to work harder and smarter to sustain and improve on the achievements of his administration over the past six and a half years.

According to the governor, the honour reflects meaningful contributions to the community and the environment, emphasising that leadership is about impact, service, and empowering others.

“This recognition is not just about holding office, but about how impactful that office has been and how well one connects with people,” he said. “Each award reminds us that we must work harder, remain focused, and continue to do the right things.”

Sanwo-Olu also stressed the importance of positive storytelling about Africa, noting that good governance and integrity within the continent would strengthen its voice and presence on the global stage.

Earlier, Olufowobi praised the governor for what he described as humane and value-driven leadership, adding that Sanwo-Olu’s influence extends beyond Lagos and Nigeria to the global African community.
