Senator Tokunbo Abiru has marked a major milestone in Lagos East Senatorial District by launching 48 cooperative societies with a total of N480 million in take-off grants, empowering 2,000 constituents and distributing food packs to 12,000 households across 98 wards.
The initiative, regarded as one of the largest empowerment exercises in the district, underscores Senator Abiru’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. Traditional rulers, political leaders, community groups, and youth associations attended the event, where the senator reiterated his mission to deliver “greater good to a larger number.”
The cooperative scheme targets women, farmers, artisans, traders, and professional groups, providing flexible and affordable capital to grow businesses, build creditworthiness, and expand economic opportunities. “True empowerment is not about handouts. It is about enabling people to unlock their potential, create wealth, and contribute to national development,” Abiru said.
Each cooperative received N10 million, totalling N480 million, to strengthen grassroots economies. Additionally, 2,000 beneficiaries were provided with empowerment tools—including freezers, generators, sewing machines, grinding machines, and hairdressing equipment—designed to promote self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
