Israeli and United States strikes on Tuesday hit the building of Iran’s Assembly of Experts in Qom, according to local media reports.
The development follows a wave of US-Israeli attacks on Saturday that reportedly killed Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Tasnim news agency reported that “American-Zionist criminals attacked the Assembly of Experts building in Qom,” a city located south of Tehran. The Assembly of Experts is constitutionally mandated to appoint, supervise, and, if necessary, dismiss the country’s supreme leader.
The agency added that the main headquarters of the Assembly in Tehran had also been targeted in strikes on Monday.
In response to the leadership vacuum, plans are reportedly underway to establish an interim leadership council comprising the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, the body responsible for overseeing legislation and vetting electoral candidates.
The interim council is expected to govern the country pending the selection of a permanent successor to the supreme leader
