he camp of Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe has dismissed media reports claiming that the minister-designate promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months, describing the reports as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of his remarks during his Senate screening.
In a statement issued following his screening before the Nigerian Senate on May 6, 2026, Tegbe clarified that he did not make any definitive commitment regarding a three-month timeline for resolving the country’s power sector challenges.
According to the statement, the minister-designate stated clearly during the screening that timelines for reforms and grid stabilization were still being developed and would depend on detailed diagnostics and consultations with stakeholders across the electricity value chain.
Tegbe, however, assured lawmakers that initial efforts aimed at stabilising the national grid would commence within the first 100 days of his tenure if confirmed.
The statement noted that the minister-designate explained that broader structural reforms in the power sector, particularly those relating to sector credibility, gas supply, and metering, could take about one year to achieve meaningful progress.
“My promise to this chamber and to Nigeria is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe said during the screening.
He pledged to focus on stabilising the national grid, modernising power infrastructure, improving commercial frameworks, and strengthening accountability across the electricity sector.
On tariff reforms, Tegbe assured that vulnerable households would be protected while efforts are made to improve sustainability, boost investor confidence, and enhance overall sector efficiency.
The statement further noted that the minister-designate remains open to constructive engagement with the media and welcomed requests for clarification to ensure accurate public understanding of proposed reforms in the power sector.
It added that Tegbe remains committed to transparency, disciplined implementation, and measurable progress in addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
