Tinubu Administration Prioritizes Food Security Amid Rising Prices

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing food security as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, highlighting several initiatives aimed at combating hunger and ensuring agricultural development.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, stated on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that food security is central to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Food security is on the front burner in the agriculture sector; it is the mainstream of Nigeria’s economy. It is expected to play a critical role in poverty alleviation and gender inclusivity,” Abdullahi said.

He emphasized President Tinubu’s dedication to eradicating hunger, revealing the administration’s goal to ensure that “no man goes to bed hungry.”

Tackling Rising Food Prices
Rising food prices in Nigeria have placed basic commodities beyond the reach of millions, prompting the government to implement palliative measures. Last year, shortly after his inauguration, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on food security to address the crisis.

As part of this initiative, the government distributed food relief packages to vulnerable Nigerians and bolstered support for the agricultural sector.

“We will engage our security architecture to protect the farms and farmers so that they can return to their farmlands without fear of attacks,” President Tinubu said, underscoring the importance of safeguarding agricultural activities.

Strategic Investments in Agriculture
President Tinubu also tasked the Central Bank of Nigeria with continuing its role in funding the agricultural value chain. The administration has identified 500,000 hectares of arable land for farming, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and expand food availability.

The Federal Government has pledged to remain focused on long-term solutions to food insecurity, integrating agricultural policies that address poverty, improve rural livelihoods, and promote sustainable farming practices.

With food security at the heart of its economic agenda, the Tinubu administration is working to transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and ensure a stable food supply for its growing population.
