President Bola Tinubu has described the late Doyin Abiola as an icon of Nigerian journalism who broke barriers and shaped the country’s media landscape.
In a condolence message to the Abiola family, the President noted that she was the first woman to edit a national newspaper and later became the first female managing director of a daily newspaper.
“Her immense contributions to journalism and gender equity laid a foundation for generations of women. Her impact on our democracy was even more profound,” Tinubu said.
He praised her integrity, tenacity, and dedication to public service, adding that Nigerians would not forget her leadership in journalism, her advocacy for women’s empowerment, and her commitment to democratic ideals.
Abiola began her career at the Concord in 1980 as its pioneer editor and later oversaw all its titles, including the Weekend Concord, which redefined human-interest reporting. She received the DAME Lifetime Achievement Award for her role in promoting democracy through the media.
