Truck Crash at Badagry Roundabout Kills LASTMA Officer, Two Others

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of one of its officers and two civilians in a road accident at the Badagry Roundabout heading towards Seme on Monday.

In a statement, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, described the incident as “tragic and deeply saddening.” The agency said a truck reportedly suffered brake failure while travelling at high speed, losing control and striking the LASTMA officer and a pedestrian. The vehicle then fatally hit another individual before stopping about 200 meters from the initial collision.

“The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by LASTMA personnel and handed over to the police,” the statement added. Emergency responders, including LASTMA officers, the Badagry Police Division, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Defence Corps, and concerned citizens rushed the victims to the General Hospital, Badagry, where they were pronounced dead.

Reacting, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the officer as “a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Lagos” and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

He urged logistics and haulage companies to enforce rigorous vehicle maintenance, particularly on braking systems, emphasizing that mechanical failure can have fatal consequences.

The truck involved has been impounded and transferred to the Badagry Police Division for further investigation. LASTMA said it would work with relevant authorities to ensure accountability and enhance road safety measures across Lagos State.
