Zenith Bank’s Strong 2023 Performance Reinforces Industry Leadership

By Ayomide Otitoju

Zenith Bank Plc has solidified its position as a leader in the Nigerian banking sector, with its 2023 financial performance showcasing significant growth and value for investors. The bank reported an earnings per share (EPS) of N21.55, translating to an impressive earnings yield of approximately 60%, making it a standout value investment in the financial industry.

In 2023, Zenith Bank achieved a pre-tax profit of N796 billion and a post-tax profit of N677 billion, driven by aggressive business expansion and a strong brand presence. The bank’s gross earnings more than doubled, from N946 billion in 2022 to N2.13 trillion in 2023, making it one of only three Nigerian banks to exceed the N2 trillion mark in gross earnings.

The bank’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2024, with gross earnings surging 189% year-on-year to N781 billion. Profit before tax tripled to N320 billion, and net profit soared by 291% to N258 billion. This resulted in a first-quarter EPS increase from N2.10 to N8.22, indicating that Zenith Bank is on track to surpass its 2023 performance.

Zenith Bank is currently raising capital through a hybrid rights issue and public offer, priced at N36 and N36.50 per share, respectively. This initiative presents a significant opportunity for investors, as the bank’s recent share price has reached as high as N47.35, suggesting a potential gain of around 32% for those participating in the offer.

With a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 1.30x, well below the industry average of 2.2x, and a price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 0.4, Zenith Bank’s stock appears undervalued, offering substantial potential for capital appreciation.

The capital raised will help Zenith Bank meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new minimum capital requirement of N500 billion and support its expanding operations and IT infrastructure investments. Under the leadership of Group Managing Director/CEO Adaora Umeoji, the bank is set to further strengthen its technological capabilities and maintain its leadership in the Nigerian banking sector. Investors seeking stability and growth are encouraged to consider Zenith Bank’s ongoing capital raise as a promising investment opportunity.
