Former Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Tinubu to reduce the price of petrol, warning that Nigerians are suffering under the weight of skyrocketing fuel, food, and essential goods costs. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Ndume expressed concern that the escalating prices are becoming unaffordable for the average Nigerian, particularly the poor, who make up the majority of the population.
He criticized those pushing for harsh reforms, accusing them of trying to pit the public against President Tinubu by implementing policies that worsen inflation and the exchange rate, making life unbearable for Nigerians. Ndume warned that these “bad elements” are determined to inflict pain on the people, which could ultimately damage the President’s reputation.
“I’m appealing to the President to resist those trying to turn the people against his administration. The hardship is becoming unbearable. In Borno, where I am now, people are truly suffering, hungry, frustrated, and angry,” he said.
The senator emphasized that while he believes Tinubu has good intentions for Nigeria, some of his advisers are leading him astray. He highlighted the severe impact of rising transportation costs, which are driving up food prices and making travel unaffordable for many Nigerians.
“Farmers can’t move their products due to high transport costs, and people can’t afford food or travel. It’s getting too much,” he said, calling on the President to address the situation urgently upon his return to the country.
Ndume concluded by urging Tinubu to act swiftly to prevent further strain on Nigerians’ purchasing power, warning that the patience of the public should not be tested.
