A Ukrainian drone attack killed a mother and her two-year-old child in western Russia on Wednesday, local officials reported, as a wave of overnight strikes set an oil refinery ablaze and targeted a nuclear facility. The barrage marks another escalation in the nearly three-year conflict, with both sides intensifying aerial assaults on military and energy infrastructure.
Casualties and Damage in Belgorod
Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, confirmed the deaths, calling the attack on a residential home “the most terrible thing.” He added that the child’s father and sibling were also injured in the strike.
Russia’s defense ministry reported that its air defenses intercepted 104 Ukrainian drones across multiple western regions, including Kursk, Bryansk, Smolensk, Tver, and Belgorod. However, several drones managed to hit strategic targets, including an oil refinery and a nuclear facility.
Refinery Blaze in Nizhny Novgorod
Ukraine claimed responsibility for a strike on an oil refinery in Kstovo, located in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, roughly 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the front lines. Russian officials said falling debris from a downed drone triggered a fire at the refinery, owned by petrochemical giant Sibur.
“As a result of repelling a drone attack, debris fell on the Sibur-Kstovo enterprise, causing a fire,” the company stated on Telegram. Both Sibur and the regional governor assured that there were no casualties, and emergency responders were working to contain the blaze. Unverified images circulating on social media showed massive flames and plumes of smoke rising above the facility.
Ukraine has previously justified targeting Russian energy infrastructure, arguing that such strikes disrupt military logistics and cut off key revenue sources funding Moscow’s war effort.
Drone Attack Near Nuclear Facility
In the Smolensk region, Governor Vasily Anokhin said Russian air defenses shot down a Ukrainian drone attempting to strike a nuclear facility. He reported no damage or casualties but did not specify the site. The Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, located near Desnogorsk, is the only known facility in the area.
Russia Responds with Airstrikes
Moscow retaliated with its own overnight drone assault on Ukraine, prompting air raid alerts across multiple regions. The Ukrainian air force reported that it intercepted 29 Russian drones targeting nine areas, mainly in the country’s south and east.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that debris from a downed Russian drone had fallen in a central district of the capital. Meanwhile, in the Black Sea region of Odesa, Russian drones reportedly attacked port facilities in the town of Izmail. In the southern city of Kherson, Mayor Roman Mrochko said a 52-year-old man was fatally wounded in a separate Russian drone strike.
Rising Tensions Ahead of War Anniversary
The latest wave of attacks comes at a critical moment as Ukraine nears the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The prolonged conflict has been marked by grinding battles, with Russia making slow but steady territorial advances, particularly in eastern Ukraine.
On Wednesday, the Russian defense ministry announced the capture of Novoyelizavetivka, a village in Donetsk, one of four regions Moscow claimed to have annexed in 2022 despite lacking full control. The village lies near Dnipropetrovsk, a region Russian forces appear poised to enter for the first time since the war began.
With hostilities escalating on both sides, the conflict shows no sign of de-escalation, even as diplomatic efforts to broker a resolution remain stalled.
