Pope Francis, 88, remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after suffering two episodes of acute respiratory failure due to pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday.
The pontiff, who was admitted on February 14 with bronchitis, has since developed complications that sparked global concern about his health.
According to a Vatican statement, Francis slept through the night and continues to rest. His condition remains serious, with doctors closely monitoring his recovery.
On Monday, the Vatican revealed that the Pope had experienced respiratory failure caused by a severe buildup of mucus in his airways, leading to bronchospasm. The condition, which impairs the lungs’ ability to supply oxygen to the body, can be life-threatening.
While his prognosis remains “reserved,” indicating uncertainty over his recovery, Francis continues to work from his special suite on the 10th floor of the hospital.
Despite missing his traditional Sunday Angelus prayer for the third consecutive week, the Vatican released a written message from the Pope in which he expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support.
“I feel all your affection and closeness, and at this particular time, I feel as if I am ‘carried’ and supported by all God’s people. Thank you all,” he said.
