Farmers in Okunland are set to benefit from a ₦150 million agricultural empowerment programme launched by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the National Assembly. The initiative, unveiled in Lokoja, targets farmers across Kogi State, including Yagba, Ijumu, and Kabba-Bunu areas of Okunland.
A total of 165 farmers drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts were selected as beneficiaries. Items distributed include sprayers, herbicides, improved seeds, liquid organic fertilizers, and cash support. The programme also features hands-on training in cassava and fisheries value chains, alongside the establishment of demonstration farms on over 150 hectares, each equipped with motorized boreholes.
Project consultant, Dr. Tunde Arosanyin, said the intervention is designed to help farmers recover from recent setbacks caused by falling food prices, while improving productivity and profitability. Okunland, a hub for cassava, yam, maize, rice, and fish farming, has in recent years struggled with challenges including insecurity and poor storage facilities.
Beneficiaries described the initiative as timely and impactful, noting that it provides both modern knowledge and essential resources to boost yields and income. Stakeholders said the programme will strengthen Okunland’s role as a key contributor to Kogi State’s agricultural economy.
