Akpabio Claims Plot to Oust Him by Adamawa, Kwara Politicians

By Ayomide Otitoju

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that certain political figures in Adamawa and Kwara states are working to remove him from office. Speaking at a gathering of youth leaders in Abuja, Akpabio suggested that his leadership is being challenged due to political opposition.

While he did not mention names, speculation has linked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki to the alleged plot. Akpabio emphasized that his position extends beyond party politics, arguing that the Niger Delta had not held the Senate Presidency for over 46 years and should not take the opportunity lightly.

Addressing controversies surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti-Oduaghan’s suspension, Akpabio maintained that the Senate followed due process and that the chamber’s rules must be upheld. He reaffirmed that legislative processes cannot be halted by court orders, as the Senate operates independently of the judiciary and executive.

Meanwhile, Bukola Saraki has denied calling for Akpabio’s resignation, clarifying that his comments were misinterpreted. Saraki stated that his concerns were focused on ensuring a transparent investigation into allegations involving Akpoti-Oduaghan, rather than seeking Akpabio’s removal. He stressed the need for accountability in the Senate while distancing himself from any political motives.
